Cape Town not short of motivation, says Stekelenburg

Ajax Cape Town coach Maarten Stekelenberg insists they still have a great deal to play for this Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.

Ajax lost the League title on the last day of the 2010-11 campaign, but some hot and cold performances this time around means they are nowhere near those heady heights.

Still, Stekelenberg believes all is not lost.

There is a lot to play for; we set goals for ourselves at the beginning of the season, he told Kickoff.com.

We really wanted to be at top of the table and challenge for the league title. I think that s far away at this point so a top four place will be something to play for and fight for.

On Wednesday Ajax face a Bidvest Wits side who have won just once this year, and who are on a six-game losing streak…

Eriksen returning to training but Ten Hag says Man Utd need to win without him

Christian Eriksen returns to full training with Manchester United on Tuesday, manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

The Denmark international has been sidelined since January with an ankle injury but remains hopeful of featuring before the end of the season.

While Eriksen will not be available to feature against his former side, Brentford, on Wednesday, a return could be right around the corner.

He s not ready for tomorrow but he s returning to the pitch and into team training today, so we now have to see how quickly he can make progress, Ten Hag said at a press conference.

Eriksen s continued absence in midfield is further complicated by Casemiro s suspension. He was issued a four-match suspension following his red card in the goalless draw against Southa…

Lyon sink 10-man Benfica to maintain momentum

Lyon confirmed their recent revival with a 2-0 victory at home to Portuguese champions Benfica at Stade Gerland here on Wednesday that sent them three points clear in Champions League Group B.

A downward header from Jimmy Briand set Lyon on their way mid-way through the first half and, after Nicolas Gaitan had been sent off for Benfica, Lisandro Lopez sealed victory with a close-range goal shortly after the interval.

Lyon coach Claude Puel had come under serious pressure after his side won just one of their first seven league matches, but they are now on a run of four straight victories in all competitions.

Having already beaten second-placed Schalke and Hapoel Tel-Aviv, the 2002-2008 French champions are now closing on a place in the Champions League knockout…

Copa Libertadores Review: Advantage San Lorenzo in QFs as Santos and Gremio draw

San Lorenzo drew first blood in the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores, while Santos and Gremio were held in their opening-leg matches.

Champions in 2014, San Lorenzo accounted for Lanus 2-0 in Wednesday s all-Argentinean clash thanks to a brace from Nicolas Blandi.

Welcoming Lanus to Estadio Pedro Bidegain, San Lorenzo took a lead into the half-time interval courtesy of Blandi.

Blandi opened the scoring in the 34th minute, weaving his way past Diego Braghieri before curling the ball beyond Lanus goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.

Guardiola: Man City controlled PSG, but Messi´s goal was fantastic

Manchester City controlled Paris Saint-Germain but were undone by a fantastic Lionel Messi goal, Pep Guardiola said.

City were beaten 2-0 at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday in their Champions League clash with the Ligue 1 giants.

Idrissa Gueye gave PSG a first-half lead and Bernardo Silva somehow hit the crossbar with the goal gaping with the best City chance of the half.

The Premier League champions had 54 per cent of the possession but could not find a way past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the PSG goal, and Messi then made the result safe with a spectacular finish from Kylian Mbappe s lay-off.

Yet Guardiola had few complaints about his side s performance, coming just three days after an impressive 1-0 win at Chelsea in the Premier League.

Virgil van Dijk will show he is Premier League’s best once more – Sami Hyypia

“He is one of the best in the business in the world,” Hyypia told the PA news agency at a Nike Game On initiative which, in conjunction with the LFC Foundation, has provided more than 8,000 local schoolchildren with access to a range of sports.

“I think he has raised the standard with everyone expecting him to play at that level every time and that is very difficult.

“But he is doing well, he is a big part of our team and a big leader of the team so I think we all need to be patient and his best is coming.

“I think this season he has shown in some games he is still at the level and I have no doubts he will be the best centre-back in the league this season.”

Despite their good start to the season there has been scrutiny on Liverpool’s defence…

England have more belief ahead of Denmark match than 2018 semi-final – Maguire

England are a better side now than the one that lost to Croatia at the 2018 World Cup and have a lot more faith in overcoming Denmark in their latest semi-final, according to Harry Maguire.

The Three Lions eased to a 4-0 win over Ukraine in Saturday s Euro 2020 quarter-final in Rome – their biggest win in the knockout stages of a major tournament – to set up a showdown with Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday.

England lost their most recent semi-final appearance in the competition on penalties to Germany in 1996, while also losing at that stage to Croatia in the World Cup three years ago en route to finishing fourth.

Not since being crowned world champions on home soil in 1966 have England reached the final of a major tournament, but Maguire insists his side wil…
